Calorie Counter App vs Food Diary: Which One Actually Works for Indian Food
The short answer
If you eat a lot of packaged or restaurant food, or the same few dishes every day, an app saves time and gives numbers consistent enough to compare week to week.
If you eat mostly home cooked food from a shared pan, with sabzi that changes daily and oil that is poured rather than measured, a paper diary for the first week or two will teach you more than any app will.
For most Indian households the answer is not one or the other. It is a diary first to find out what you actually eat, then an app to keep that knowledge cheap to maintain. The reason has nothing to do with technology. The hard part of tracking is not arithmetic, it is noticing.
What an app is actually good at
Three things, and they are genuinely useful.
Repeatability. Log the same dal entry on Monday and again on Thursday and you get the same number. That sounds trivial and it is the most valuable property of an app, because weight management is a comparison exercise. You are not learning the true calorie content of your mother's rajma, you are finding out whether this week was lighter than last week, and a wrong number that stays wrong in the same direction still answers that.
Speed after setup. The first three days are slow because you are searching for everything. By the second week your recents list carries most of your food and a whole day takes under a minute. A diary never gets faster than handwriting.
Packaged food and eating out. Barcode entries, brand entries and standard restaurant portions are the kind of fixed, repeatable items a database handles well, and a running total visible at four in the afternoon changes what you order for dinner. A diary only gives you a total after you sit down and add, which is usually never.
What a paper diary is actually good at
Three things an app quietly removes.
It forces you to describe the food. In an app you search for aloo gobi and tap the first result. In a diary you write aloo gobi, one and a half katori, and if you are honest you also write two teaspoons oil, because you saw the oil go in. That half sentence is where most of the real information lives. Indian home food is mixed food, and mixed food is what a search box handles worst. It is slow, and slowness is the point. Writing takes about ten seconds a line, and in those ten seconds people routinely remember the biscuit they ate at the desk. Tapping a saved entry takes one second and skips the remembering.
It does not create false precision. A diary entry that says roti, three, medium, feels like an estimate, and it is one. An app that returns 297 for the same meal feels like a measurement, and it is not. That false confidence causes real mistakes, mostly people believing a stall is impossible because the numbers say so.

Where both break down with Indian home food
Both methods fail in the same four places, and neither one warns you.
The shared pan. Sabzi is cooked for the family, not portioned per person, so logging it means estimating the whole pan and then the fraction on your plate. Nobody does this reliably at the end of a working day. Log your plate in katori terms instead, using one katori that lives in your kitchen and never changes.
Oil. Oil is the largest single error in Indian food logging and it is invisible in both methods, because it has no portion, it is poured. Measure at the source rather than the plate. Note how long a litre lasts the household and how many people eat from it. A litre in three weeks for four people is roughly two to three teaspoons per person per day, and that becomes a fixed line in your log.
Raw versus cooked. Rice roughly triples in weight when cooked and dal absorbs a lot of water. Entries rarely say which state they mean, so the same katori can be logged at wildly different numbers. Pick entries that say cooked and stay with them.
Chai, and everything eaten standing up. Four cups of sweet chai, two biscuits, a spoonful while tasting the sabzi, half of a child's paratha. None of it feels like eating, so none of it gets recorded, and this is the most common reason a log shows a deficit while the scale does not move.
None of these is solved by switching tools. They are solved by fixed rules: one katori, one oil figure, cooked entries, and every liquid written first.
A simple test: run both for one week
If you are undecided, do not read more comparisons. Run the experiment, it takes seven days.
Days one to seven, paper. Write every single thing you eat and drink, with a rough quantity, and change nothing about your eating. Not one thing. The goal is a photograph of your normal life, not an improvement.
End of week one, build your list. Write out every food that appeared more than twice. For most households that is twelve to twenty items, and that short list, not the database, is your diet.
Week two, move the list into an app. Set those items up once, choosing entries that specify cooked weights and reasonable oil. Logging is then selection rather than search.
Then decide. If the app now feels effortless, keep it. If you keep skipping days because it feels like homework, go back to paper and simplify down to portion rules. Both outcomes are fine. What is not fine is quitting in week one and concluding that tracking does not work for you, when what happened is that you searched a database for your grandmother's cooking.
