Brittle Nails: The Causes Behind Them and What Actually Helps
The short answer
If your nails split, peel in layers or snap even when they are kept short, the two most common reasons are simple and fixable: too much water and detergent contact, and a gap in iron, biotin or protein in your diet. Less often, brittle nails are one of the early, easy to miss signs of a thyroid problem.

What a healthy nail actually needs, and why fixes take weeks to show
A fingernail is made almost entirely of a tough protein called keratin, built up in tightly packed, overlapping layers by cells at the base of the nail called the nail matrix, the small area hidden just under the skin at the base of your cuticle. A healthy nail plate holds a small, steady amount of water between those layers, which is what keeps it flexible enough to bend slightly under everyday pressure without cracking or lifting apart.
Brittleness happens when that layered structure breaks down in one of two directions. Either the layers lose too much water and become dry and rigid, which is the more common pattern and shows up as nails that peel horizontally in thin sheets at the tip, or the nail loses too much moisture and protein together, which shows up more as vertical splitting, general thinning and a nail that feels weak along its whole length rather than just at the edge. Both patterns can exist on the same hand at once, and both usually trace back to repeated water exposure, an actual nutrient shortfall, or both layered on top of each other.

The most common causes, from most to least frequent
Frequent water and detergent exposure. Repeated wetting and drying, especially with soap or dishwashing liquid, is the single biggest cause seen in everyday life. Low iron.
